iPhone 7S Release Date, Price, Specs And Features

Updated on

While much of the attention for the next generation Apple smartphones has understandably been on the iPhone 8, the iPhone 7S range also promises to be interesting. While the updated versions of the existing iPhone 7 may slip under the radar to a certain extent, they still promise to be outstanding smartphones. Despite being somewhat conservative, the iPhone 7 was still a hugely impressive device; thus the improved iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus will certainly be worth watching out for. Many Apple fans are also wondering what the iPhone 7s release date will be.

Design

While the iPhone 8 will be dominated by a wraparound screen that will take up significant real estate on the front panel, the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus are likely to be more conventional. This probably means that the display included in the devices will be a flat panel, while the design may also feature larger bezels than the iPhone 8.

Previous reports have suggested that the iPhone 7S will feature an aluminum body, but this has now been drawn into question by the latest rumors.

Wireless charging

However, a new report from Apple partner Wistron recently suggested that the iPhone 7S Plus will benefit from some unique functionality. The phablet will receive wireless charging for the first time; a feature that was previously assumed to only be included in the iPhone 8 in 2017.

Apple has reportedly been working on a revolutionary wireless charging system which will enable iPhone customers to charge their devices at the previously unimaginable distance of 15 feet. This system will then presumably appear in the iPhone 7S if this report is to be believed.

The fact that wireless charging will be included in the iPhone 7S would seem to rule out the possibility of an aluminum unibody, as this would make this technology logistically impossible.

Waterproofing

Wistron also suggests that the waterproofing rating of the iPhone 7S could be improved in comparison to previous devices, ramping it up from IP67 to IP68. This would then ensure that the iPhone 7S Plus delivers the same quality of waterproofing as the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. This has been reported by credible sources, with the Korea Herald recently printing this news. While this will be useful for Apple in its ongoing battle with Samsung, the practical difference for the average consumer will be extremely minimal.

Display

According to Cowen and Company analyst Timothy Arcuri, both the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus will be based on LCD technology, with the OLED display strongly rumored being saved for the iPhone 8.

The likelihood is that Apple will freeze the screen resolution of the iPhone 7S, meaning that the iPhone 7S Plus will feature a full HD display, with the 750 x 1,334 pixel resolution from the iPhone 7 retained for the smartphone-sized edition. We can probably also expect 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays.

Processor

It is believed that both the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus will benefit from the new A11 chip, which will incorporate a brand new 10nm manufacturing process. This new chip is believed to be ultra- fast, meaning that the next generation smartphones will be extremely slick. It is not known precisely what clock speed the new processor will possess, or whether Apple will switch to octa-core technology in 2017. But the smart money is on an extremely nifty quad-core unit, which outperforms even the A10 Fusion processor.

Storage

Although Apple has placed a particular emphasis on storage in recent iPhone generations, it is unlikely that the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus will benefit from increased storage options. This means that the 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB from the iPhone 7 will be retained.

Apple has also been reluctant to embrace micro SD, perhaps indicative of the slightly buttoned-down nature of its products. So there is no reason to believe that micro SD will appear in the iPhone 7S, meaning that there will be no flexibility with the storage in this generation.

Memory

Analyst Timothy Arcuri from Cowen and Company has suggested that both of the iPhone 7S units, and for that matter even the iPhone 8, will feature 3GB of RAM memory. This would perhaps be slightly surprising, as this quantity of memory was already included in the iPhone 7 Plus last year.

Other reports have suggested that the smartphone version of the iPhone 7S will retain the existing 2GB from the iPhone 7 generation, while some analysts believe that the iPhone 8 will be armed with 4GB, effectively creating a tiered system in this department.

Camera

The photographic capabilities of smartphones is becoming ever more important, and Apple is expected to particularly focus on the photographic capabilities of its smartphone range in 2017. The iPhone 8 has been linked with a vertically-aligned dual-camera setup, with the intention of delivering augmented reality functionality. But will this apply to the iPhone 7S range?

Japanese blog Mac Otakara has quoted sources in Taiwan which suggest that the phablet version of the iPhone 7S will indeed receive this technology. Increasingly, it seems that the smartphone version of the iPhone range will be a relatively budget device intended to deliver an affordable platform for those who crave the iPhone branding.

Apple has also been collaborating with LG in order to deliver a dual-camera model capable of capturing 3D photographs. Whether this technology will appear in either of the upgraded models remains to be seen, though.

iPhone 7S Release date

The Wall Street Journal has already reported that Apple will launch updated versions of the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus in 2017. But there has been considerable debate over the iPhone 8, which could conceivably have a knock-on effect on these two devices.

Reports have also indicated that Apple is ramping up the production of its next-generation smartphones earlier than usual. Nonetheless, the overwhelming likelihood is that the iPhone 7S release date is said to be same as iPhone 8.
