UPDATE 03-29-2017: Samsung has held simultaneous events in London’s Olympic Park and New York’s Lincoln Center to mark the unveiling of the Galaxy S8. This is undoubtedly a particularly critical moment for manufacturer, as the handset represents the first major device release since the disastrous recalling of the Galaxy Note 7.

Many indeed view the next couple of mobiles from Samsung as critical to the future of the hugely successful corporation. And with Apple due to release a majorly redesigned iPhone 8 to mark the tenth anniversary of the series this year, the Galaxy S8 will be entering into a hugely competitive climate.

Ahead of the event, it was expected that the Galaxy S8 would include an edge-to-edge display, two separate models with 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch screens, the inclusion of a personal assistant for the first time in the shape of Bixby, Android 7.0, and the retention of the headphone jack, seen as a direct response to Apple’s abandoning of this common feature.

So were the analysts correct, and how did the Galaxy S8 turn out in reality?

Introduction

Samsung’s mobile chief, DJ Koh, was on stage to introduce the Galaxy S8 to the world, and there was no shortage of rhetoric and hyperbole to accompany its unveiling. Koh described the Galaxy S8 as “beyond the limits of what you have known before and bring you close to the things you love. A gateway to a galaxy of possibilities”.

The executive also asserted that the new smartphone will herald “a new era of smartphone design… an era without edges or limits”, and that it will continue to extend the Samsung “heritage of great innovation and stunning design”.

Display

This preamble led to more concrete details about the Galaxy S8, and the smartphone will indeed come in two separate sizes, with the 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch displays that were anticipated indeed emerging. The wraparound display has also come to fruition, with the new design involving a screen that occupy almost the entirety of the front of the phone; perhaps the most striking aspect of this new device.

Interestingly, the screen resolution of the Galaxy S8 range also receives a minor boost over the last generation. Both models are capable of displaying 2,960 x 1,440 pixels, meaning that the Galaxy S8 is the first mobile phone to be rated as Mobile HDR Premium. What this means in layman’s terms is that it meets a requisite standard for high dynamic range and content, meaning that colors will be more pronounced and a larger range of brightness will be present than in most smartphone products.

Dimensions

The new design and wraparound screen means that the Galaxy S8 handsets are particularly compact. The smartphone version of the Galaxy S8 (although arguably both devices are now sliding into phablet territory) features dimensions of 148.9 x 68.1 x 8mm, meaning that the handset is 1cm shorter and narrower than an iPhone 7 Plus, despite having a significantly larger display.

It will be very much over to Apple to respond to this now, with the consumer electronics giant having already been linked with a similar screen for the next generation iPhone 8.

Specs

Samsung was fairly forthcoming with the specs of the Galaxy S8 series, with the Korean company revealing that both devices feature an octa-core chip. Four bundles of cores will be clocked at 2.3GHz in the Galaxy S8, with the other four being timed at 1.7 GHz. It is notable that the chip is also the first to feature in a smartphone that has been manufactured in a 0.1 micron production process, meaning that this is a highly refined product.

Both RAM and storage have been frozen from the Galaxy S7, with 4GB of memory and 64GB of internal flash available. However, as was largely expected, Samsung has included a micro SD card slot, enabling users to expand the storage of the device.

Battery

One difference between the two Galaxy S8 releases is that the larger Galaxy S8+ benefits from a heftier battery. The Galaxy S8+ cell is a 3,500mAh unit, with the smaller release featuring a battery of 3,000 mAh capacity.

Android

As was entirely predictable, the Galaxy S8 will ship with Android Nougat. This is due to be replaced by the Android O release in the third quarter of 2017, with the Galaxy S8 being fully compatible with this new software.

Camera

The cameras included in the Galaxy S8 series do not diverge hugely from previous devices. A 12-megapixel rear-facing camera, with optical image stabilization, and an 8-megapixel selfie camera are included. Both are notable for possessing an f/1.7 aperture. The fingerprint sensor is also present on the back of the device, located next to the rear-camera, while a facial unlocking feature has also been implemented.

Bixby

As Samsung had previously made clear, its new personal assistant Bixby does indeed launch with the Galaxy S8. The proof will be in the pudding with this particular feature, but it was announced that Bixby will deliver a multi-modal feature similar to Google Assistant. This can be operated via voice control or camera, while it is also possible to interact with items on-screen with this function.

One slight disappointment is that this feature will not launch in the United States until May, with Samsung choosing to float it initially in Korea. However, other aspects of the camera and a text service will be available from day one in North America.

Samsung DeX, Gear VR

Another major new feature that Samsung was keen to promote was the worldwide launch of Samsung DeX, short for Desktop Experience. This will enable Galaxy S8 users to dock their phones and effectively utilize them as fully-fledged desktop computing environments. Access to Office and Autodesk will then be available through a virtual desktop service, while keyboard and mouse control will also be possible.

Samsung also demonstrated a relaunch of its Gear VR headset, with a wireless gesture-based remote control unveiled. The Gear 360 camera now also has the ability to live stream 360-degrees video, which Samsung believes could be a tipping point for the widespread adoption of virtual reality.

Price and release date

The full retail price of the Galaxy S8 will be $750, with the Galaxy S8+ retailing at $850. Both go on sale on April 28.

Pre-orders

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are going up for pre-order starting March 30th, which precedes a full release on April 21 in stores and online.

GALAXY S8 RUMORS

UPDATE 03-24-2017: With Samsung due to unveil its latest Galaxy S8 smartphone in just days’ time, leaked photos and videos have emerged displaying details of the new handset. The latest leaks reveal that the Galaxy S8 will benefit from an edge-to-edge screen, while the physical design of the device is also significantly altered from previous releases.

Bixby footage

It seems that the Home button will indeed be removed, while the new Bixby smart assistant benefits from its own dedicated button. Bixby is also showcased in the video. Footage suggests that Bixby will feature a broad functionality, enabling users to be supported in a wide range of tasks.

The video in question is believed to display an early version of the Galaxy S8, and it suggests that Samsung has decided to relocate the fingerprint sensor to the back of the device. This has been necessitated by the larger screen included in the Korean company’s phone. It is also notable in the leaked images that the Galaxy S8 will very much take its cue from previous premium Edge versions of the Galaxy range.

Leaked images also suggest that the Galaxy S8 will retail in at least four different colors, with black, grey, silver and gold models definitely available. Unconfirmed rumours have previously suggested that the Galaxy S8 will feature a pressure-sensitive display, and that this latest leak certainly seems to confirm this notion.

Another intriguing aspect of the Galaxy S8 is its purported ability to connect to a physical monitor. This feature is available in the upcoming Android O software, and is expected to be migrating to the Galaxy S8 eventually. The newest version of Android will not be ready in time for the release of the Galaxy S8, meaning that it will instead run a modified version of the Android Nougat OS.

Retail price

Prominent leaker Evan Blass has reported that the Galaxy S8 should retail at €799 in Europe, with the larger S8+ model priced at €899. The American consumer electronics market usually compares very favorably with Europe, so this suggests that both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will retail at significantly under $1,000 in the US.

Samsung will launch the new smartphone at an event in New York on Wednesday, after it decided to abandon its usual procedure of unveiling at the Mobile World Congress. There is no doubt that the Galaxy S8 is a particularly critical mobile for Samsung after the fiasco of the exploding Galaxy Note 7. thus, the Galaxy S8 is expected to be a particularly outstanding performer, and thus the handset has been linked with some powerful specs.

Display

It is believed, though, that Samsung will stick with quad HD for the Galaxy S8, with the smartphone version of the phone having a 5.8-inch screen, and the larger Galaxy S8+ benefiting from a 6.2-inch display.

RAM and storage

It is expected that both models in the Galaxy S8 series will benefit from micro SD functionality, meaning that the amount of storage in the handsets will be flexible. But a baseline of 64GB for the Galaxy S8 has been anticipated, alongside 32GB for the standard smartphone.

clost

Samsung will also resist the temptation to increase the RAM memory included in the handset to 6GB, instead providing 4 GB of memory for both models in this generation.

Camera

There is some debate over whether the Galaxy S8 will be fitted with a dual-lens camera, but the larger Galaxy S8+ is definitely expected to feature this provision. Samsung has been less committed to increasing the megapixel rating of cameras in recent device releases, and is thus expected to stick with 12-megapixels for the Galaxy S8 generation. An f/1.7 aperture is also anticipated.

Audio

Harman Kardon stereo speakers will be fitted in both versions of the Galaxy S8, as the Korean corporation looks to benefit from its purchase of the audio technology company.

Battery

The Galaxy S8+ will require the larger battery in order to deal with the more sizeable screen included in the handset. This means that the phablet will benefit from a 3,500 mAh battery, with the smaller Galaxy S8 expected to feature a 3,000 mAh unit. Fast charging will also be included in both models.

Processor

The processor included in the Galaxy S8 will depend upon geographical location. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 is intended for the Western marketplace, with the Exynos 8895 to be used in East Asia. Samsung has continually relied on its proprietary technology for its native marketplace, and it remains to be seen whether this will ever migrate to the west as well.

Nonetheless, the latest Snapdragon release will be clocked at 2.4 GHz for the larger cores, meaning that the Galaxy S8 will be an extremely nifty performer.

Preorder date

Finally, a new leak seems to have confirmed the preorder date for this smartphone. According to Dutch site AndroidWorld, Samsung’s new flagship will go up for preorder in the Netherlands and Belgium, on March 29. This is very much commensurate with previous previous predictions, and indicates that the smartphone will be available at some point during April.

However, there is disagreement regarding precisely when the Galaxy S8 will go on sale, with some reports suggesting that the release date will be April 29. But other sources have suggested that the smartphone will be on the market in Korea from April 11. It is not impossible that Samsung could use different release dates for the East Asian and Western marketplace, but this certainly hasn’t been the case with recent releases, and the American market is particularly important to the mega-corporation.

Nonetheless, it seems that we will not have a huge amount of time to wait in order to find out, with the likelihood that this hugely anticipated device will finally be unveiled next week.

UPDATE 03-17-2017: The latest leaks on the Galaxy S8 suggest that the device will benefit from the slimmest bezels of any Samsung release to date. This suggestion has been derived from what is deemed to be an official Galaxy S8 event poster, presented on Twitter by the frequent tipster @UniverseIce.

Leaked image

This poster features an image of what is purported to be the forthcoming Galaxy S8, although our glimpse of this handset is limited to a partial silhouette. Also notable is the mixture of English and Korean on the promotional material, suggesting that it is intended for the East Asian marketplace.

The handset is depicted horizontally in the image, with slim portions of the bezels of the device visible at the top and bottom extremities of the smartphone, and it is from this that one can confirm that the bezels are indeed extremely slim.

Samsung has declined to comment on these rumors, indicating that its policy is to remain silent on rumor and speculation. But the view of the analyst and Samsung-following community is that the image certainly appears to be legitimate.

Aside from its authenticity, the image also confirms several leaks that have been linked with the Galaxy S8 previously. Above all else, it is noticeable that the poster depicts a Galaxy S8 with an all-screen visage. This has been rumored for some time, with the Korean manufacturer expected to remove the Home button from its next generation flagship.

If this is the case then the button’s functionality will instead be included within the display, with embedded virtual buttons expected to take over the functions of the Home button. It is also certain that Samsung will move the fingerprint scanner if this design parameter materializes, as this was also previously mounted in the Home button. Analysts have suggested that it could instead be placed on the rear of the mobile.

April release date

The poster also makes reference to April as a possible release date for the Galaxy S8, which would push back its arrival in the stores even further than was anticipated. Already it was widely believed that the Galaxy S8 would be release at a later date than previous versions of the smartphone, but late March had been floated by most sources. This new poster now suggests that the release date may slip back further still, although this does at least confirm that Samsung will be taking this device extremely seriously; certainly advisable after the disaster of the Galaxy note 7.

It’s also worth noting that the April release date may only apply to the country from which it is intended. But considering the Korean language is included in the poster, it would seem natural to conclude that this promotional material will ultimately be resident in Samsung’s native Korea. If so, then we can quite forcibly pencil in April as a release date for the smartphone, as Samsung is certain to launching in Korea from day one.

Some earlier rumors had suggested that the Galaxy S8 would would be available for preorder on either April 7 or April 10, with a possible release date of April 21. It seems that this particular suggestion now has credibility.

Iris scanner

Elsewhere this week, there have been reports emerging on the iris scanner that Samsung is strongly expected to include in the Galaxy S8. Industry officials close to the consumer electronics giant have suggested that this will be delivered in a separate 3.7-megapixel camera. This would then be located alongside the standard snapper in the Galaxy S8, with the same source suggesting that the main camera will embrace an autofocus function in this generation.

The same rumor also corroborates the idea that the fingerprint scanner in the Galaxy S8 will be moved to the rear of the device. These are all suggestions that have been rumored previously, and it seems increasingly likely that Samsung is ready to beef up the security in the Galaxy S8.

Face scanning payments

Samsung may also enable users of the Galaxy S8 to make payments via a revolutionary face recognition system. Bloomberg reported this week on the idea that the Korean corporation will utilize the latest facial recognition software in order to help the Galaxy S8 verify mobile payments.

Bloomberg quoted “people familiar with the matter,” thought to be sources close to the Samsung Supply chain, who suggest that the face-reading technology will be implemented within months of the phone going live, but probably will not be available at the time of its retail launch.

With increasing pressure on the major mobile manufacturers to deliver more intensive security features, it is believed that the Galaxy S8 will utilize a triple-layer of identification verification, with fingerprint, iris and facial identification all used to complete transactions. This would ensure that Samsung Pay becomes an extremely safe system, and would arguably result in the Galaxy S8 being the most secure device available to send mobile payments. This would undoubtedly be welcome, as there is no doubt that Android-driven devices face more challenges in this area than their iOS counterparts.

Price reports

Reports from Britain this week have also confirmed the potential pricing of the Galaxy S8, with the smartphone version expected to retail at £799. This will mean that the Galaxy S8+ is priced at £899, meaning that these are two of the priciest mobile is available on the market. US consumers will benefit from a low dollar-pound exchange rate and the usually favorable American consumer electronics market place, meaning that the Galaxy S8 should retail for under $1,000, while even the S8+ may come in under this psychologically important price tag.

4K resolution

There is still some debate on whether Samsung will include 4K resolution technology in the Galaxy S8, or instead opt to retain the quad HD resolution that has been present in previous releases. Reports this week tend to suggest that the Korean company will decide against upgrading the resolution, and that we should expect a very similar display in the Galaxy S8 to previous generations, albeit a slightly larger screen will be included.

UPDATE 03-10-2017: There are many exciting smartphones due to become available in 2017, but the Galaxy S8 will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the calendar year. This device is particularly anticipated owing to the fact that Samsung must attempts to recover from the disastrous Galaxy Note 7. It is a necessity for this handset to be impressive and, naturally, significantly more stable than Samsung’s last release.

Leaked images

Ahead of the anticipated emergence of the Galaxy S8, rumors are now accelerating regarding the next generation smartphone. A few concepts images have been released recently, while Slashleaks has also showcased a few possible leaked photos. A user by the name of ‘Leakspinner’ is responsible for one such picture, and although the consensus of opinion is that it is not legitimate, it still gives us some clues regarding the makeup of the Galaxy S8.

However, a second user has also leaked images to Slashleaks, namely ‘Seanmirza23’, and it seems that this particular source of information is far more solid. This leaker is known to have delivered pretty substantial information in the past, and it seems that his latest attempt to reveal the Galaxy S8 could be equally valid.

Images emanating from Seanmirza23 suggest that the Galaxy S8 features a screen protector produced by an unknown manufacturer. It also implies that the Samsung flagship will feature a particularly large display, in which the design of the screen takes over pretty much the entirety of the smartphone. The sides of the mobile in this leaked image curve downwards, in common with other recent Samsung releases, with the bezels above and below the screen extremely slim indeed.

This leak is particularly credible as it tallies with many of the rumors related to the Galaxy S8, along with general trends in the industry.

With only weeks to go until the Galaxy S8 is launched, the list of rumored specs for the device is solidifying rapidly. Top of the list is the display in the unit, and in accordance with the previous images, it seems that we can expect a rather large screen.

4K screen

The latest suggestion is that Samsung will produce both 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch versions of the Galaxy S8, and that there could even be a surprise in the resolution department. It has been reported in the last couple of days that Samsung may arm the Galaxy S8 with 4K resolution, resulting in the first ever Super AMOLED curved display from the corporation. This would arguably be a risk for Samsung, but there is an onus on the company to deliver something outstanding with this handset.

Android 7.0 Nougat and IP68 certification

It is also expected that the Galaxy S8 will feature Android 7.0 Nougat as its operating system, while the Korean manufacturer will also deliver IP68 certification. This would keep the Samsung device ahead of the Apple iPhone range in this department, although Apple is expected to improve the durability of the iPhone range when the iPhone 8 is released.

Processor

The Galaxy S8 will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip in the United States and an Exynos 8895 in international markets. The clock speed of these devices has yet to be released, but fans of the range will be hoping for a genuine octa-core unit.

Memory

It is believed that the Galaxy S8 may feature 6GB of memory, although other reports suggest that Samsung will only include 4GB. There is still some debate over this figure, with the final amount perhaps dependent on the screen resolution of the device. If the Galaxy S8 turns out to be a 4K resolution handset, as has been suggested this week, it could be that the corporation will opt for the 6GB figure.

Battery

The two versions of the Galaxy S8 will feature 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries. The Galaxy S8+ will naturally benefit from the larger unit, the Samsung will be looking to extend its lead over the iPhone range in this department. The Apple handset has been continually criticized for delivering a rather paltry battery life.

Cameras

A 12-megapixel main camera and 8-megapixel front-facing snapper are anticipated for the Galaxy S8, although a range of new features may also be included within its photographic capabilities. Both versions of the Galaxy S8 will also benefit from dual-lens cameras.

Built-in AI assistant

Bixby will be unveiled when the Galaxy S8 emerges, with the Viv Labs Team that worked on initial versions of Siri having been beavering away on the first ever Samsung AI assistant. It will be interesting to find out what functionality Samsung has been able to include in this first Bixby release, but it will certainly be challenging for the company to produce a piece of software that is the equal of the established Apple assistant.

USB-C

USB-C charging will be included in the Galaxy S8, with users benefiting from this sophisticated, reversible form of connection.

Storage

There is still some debate on the amount of storage to be included with the Galaxy S8, but sources close to Samsung have suggested this week that 64GB and 128GB models will be made available. This will be backed up by micro SD, enabling fans of the Android-driven device to boost storage up to 256GB.

Optional Samsung DeX HDMI dock

Another interesting suggestion for the Galaxy S8 is that it will feature an optional Samsung DeX HDMI dock. This smart dock has been linked with the next generation smartphone for a couple of months, since a patent for the technology emerged. Whether this is really a realistic prospect for the Galaxy S8 remains to be seen, but it would certainly find favor with consumers should Samsung find this to be technically plausible.

Bluetooth 5.0

Finally, it is widely believed that Bluetooth 5.0 functionality will be included with the Galaxy S8 when it arrives on the market.

Release date

Samsung confirmed during its Mobile World Congress press conference that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ will launch at a standalone event in New York City on March 29.

UPDATE 02-11-2017: The release of the Galaxy S8 should be merely weeks away, and thus the level of speculation about this flagship smartphone has reached fever pitch. So here are all the latest rumors and links regarding this next Generation handset.

Galaxy S8 Design

Not too much is known about the design of the Galaxy S8 as of yet, but Samsung Display, responsible for manufacturing the screens included in Samsung devices, has published YouTube adverts of interest. The videos feature an unknown smartphone with a design similar to that which has typically been anticipated for the Galaxy S8.

Another interesting morsel of information is the suggestion that Samsung will ditch the headphone jack for the Galaxy S8, following on from Apple’s example with the iPhone 7. However, rumors have also emerged recently that Samsung will dispense with micro-USB / USB-C in the Galaxy S8 generation. This latter suggestion seems unlikely, but Samsung will consider all possibilities for the Galaxy S8, as it requires something outstanding following the disaster of the Galaxy note 7.

If USB is ditched then the Galaxy S8 will undoubtedly charge wirelessly.

Dimensions

GSMArena has leaked what are reported to be the dimensions of both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. The Galaxy S8 will be shorter and slimmer than its predecessor, but a little wider than the Galaxy S7 at 140.14 x 72.20 x 7.30mm. GSMArena also suggests that the smartphone will feature a 5.7-inch edge-to-edge curved screen. The Galaxy S8 Plus is believed to possess an extremely large 6.2-inch screen, measuring 152.38 x 78.51 x 7.94mm, making it taller and wider than the Galaxy S7 Edge.

AI assistant

Samsung has already confirmed that the Galaxy S8 will feature its new AI assistant Bixby. Designed by the Viv Labs, the Team which previously worked on Apple’s Siri, big things are expected from Bixby as Samsung finally embraces this technology.

Home button

It is increasingly expecting that Samsung will eliminate the Home button from the upcoming Galaxy S8 to make way for the larger display linked with the handset. According to leaks, the screen will comprise 83 percent of the front panel of the phone, with a strip at the top of the device containing the eight-megapixel front-facing camera and iris scanning sensor. Apple is also expected to phase out the Home button when the iPhone 8 is released.

Display

Samsung will stick with the AMOLED technology that has served it so well in previous Galaxy S devices, particularly as Apple is anticipated to switch to OLED for the iPhone 8. Always On technology will be included in the smartphone, and the device will be pressure-sensitive for the first time. The latest rumors are that Samsung will follow the lead of Apple by introducing a similar system to its 3D Touch.

As for resolution, there is no doubt that fans of Android devices would love to see Samsung push the boat out and produce a 4K flagship smartphone. But it is far more likely that this will be held back for the Galaxy Note range, meaning that the Galaxy S8 retains the quad HD resolution from last year.

Storage

Samsung has been linked with a 256GB version of the Galaxy S8, following criticism that it has lagged behind Apple in this department. Leaks indicate that there will definitely be 64GB and 128GB storage capacity versions of the smartphone, but Samsung may also opt to directly answer the iPhone 7 with this release as well.

Fingerprint scanner

In order to accommodate the new design, Samsung is expected to move the fingerprint scanner to the rear of the device, according to reports. This would establish the scanner next to the camera in the Galaxy S8.

Camera

Meanwhile, the camera itself will be extremely impressive, with Samsung having updated the technology included once more. However, the Korean corporation has seemingly resisted the temptation to increase the megapixel rating of the camera, meaning that a 12-megapixel resolution will be delivered again.

However, the main camera in the Galaxy S8 will feature a new augmented image search which enables users to search the web for items that they point out with the camera. This has a multitude of potential uses, one of the most obvious being the ability of the smartphone to navigate to shopping websites for a particular product placed within the frame of the camera. This is the sort of nifty smart functionality that is becoming increasingly important in technology devices.

Battery

There is no doubt that the batteries included in the Galaxy S8 will be of critical importance. This barely needs to be stated after the disaster of the exploding Galaxy Note 7. However, with Samsung having had limited time to negotiate on the matter, it is expected that the same supplier will be utilized as with the previous Galaxy Note handsets. Nonetheless, Samsung has assured customers that it has dramatically improved safety, with an eight-point procedure that ensures no repeat of the Galaxy Note 7 debacle.

Samsung will also likely increase the size of the cell included in the Galaxy S8, which could mean a 4,000 mAh battery being part of the S8 makeup. It could even allow consumers to remove the battery this time out, to provide greater flexibility to its customers.

Energy efficiency

Reports also suggest that the Galaxy S8 will be significantly more energy efficient than previous releases. The new Galaxy S8 releases are believed to be 11% faster and 20% more energy efficient than the previous generation due to improved microchip and graphics technology. This will mean a significant improvement in performance, while the smartphone should also last longer on a single charge.

Computer features

Finally, an intriguing new feature reported on by The Guardian newspaper is the ability of the Galaxy S8 to connect to monitors in order to enable control of the phone with a keyboard and mouse. This computer-like functionality will make the Galaxy S8 the most advanced smartphone that Samsung has ever released, and coupled with all of the other spec increases this will make the handset an unmissable release.

Release date and price

The Galaxy S8 is expected to be available on March 29, with a rumored price tag of ?$850 USD.
