Awards season is in full swing with the Grammys and BAFTAs taking place over the weekend, and the Oscars right around the corner. It’s the time of year that actors, musicians and sports people battle it out to get their hands on some of the most coveted trophies in the world. These awards, often distinctive in design, are steeped in honour and history, but how much do we actually know about them?

BullionVault’s new infographic explores some of the highest accolades in music, film and sport and uncovers aspects few of us will know, such as what exactly they’re made from, how much they weigh and where they’re made. After finding out the weight of these iconic trophies BullionVault have worked out their values if they were made from solid gold or silver. For example, the famous Oscar given to Academy Award winners weighs 8.51lbs which means if this weight equated to solid gold, each statuette would be worth $148,302. The most valuable trophy by these standards would be the World Cup, which would be worth $237,052 if its weight of 13.6lbs related to solid gold.

While these awards aren’t really made from solid gold or silver, they’re extremely valuable and there have been several cases of trophies going missing or being stolen. For instance, the original World Cup, now known as the Jules Rimet Cup, was stolen from a trophy cabinet in Brazil in 1983 and has not been seen since. While in 2000, 55 Oscar statuettes were stolen from a loading bay, only to turn up days later behind a dumpster.

For most of us, getting the chance to lift one of these trophies would be a dream come true. However, Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor was able to make his dream come true in a less than conventional way when he parted with several thousand dollars in order to be given the ‘honour’ of Best Actor at the prestigious Filmfare Award in 1974.
