Samsung is going the extra mile to ensure that its Galaxy S8 does not blow up like the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7. The Korean electronics giant has reportedly concluded its investigation into the Note 7 explosions. While reports indicate that battery was the main cause of overheating and explosions, Samsung will officially reveal the cause of Note 7 fires on Monday, January 23.
Mass shipments of heat pipes to begin next month
Supply chain sources familiar with the matter told DigiTimes that Samsung would adopt “thermal pipe heat dissipation” solutions in the Galaxy S8 to prevent overheating. LG Electronics has also confirmed the use of heat pipes in its upcoming flagship LG G6 that will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress next month.
Samsung will source thermal pipes from Chaun Chong Technology and Auras Technology. DigiTimes added that the Galaxy S8 was initially supposed to have two ultra-thin thermal pipes for better heat dissipation. But sources told the publication that it will have the same single heat pipe design as the Galaxy S7. Volume shipments of thermal pipes will begin in February.
It is worth pointing out that Samsung had used similar heat pipes in the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 7. But it alone cannot prevent battery explosions on the Galaxy Note 7.
Galaxy S8 glass panels leaked
Separately, two glass panels of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus have surfaced on the Internet. These glass panels, posted on Twitter by DforDesign, have more openings for sensors than the Galaxy S7. DforDesign said the source of the images is a screen protector company in China. David Ruddock of Android Police believes that these glass panels line up perfectly with some of the most reliable leaks.
One reason to believe these panels are genuine is that they have more sensor cutouts than the other leaks we have seen. The previous leaks indicated that the Galaxy S8 would have the same sensors as the S7. But the Galaxy Note 7 had additional sensor cutouts, including for the iris scanner. The Galaxy S8 is also expected to feature iris scanner.

Galaxy S8 to be shown to a limited audience at MWC
The glass panels have extremely thin side bezels. The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are rumored to have 5.7-inch and 6.3-inch displays. By comparison, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge have 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch screens. According to Twitter tipster Ricciolo1, the new smartphone will be present at the Mobile World Congress, but will be shown only to a select audience. It will be publicly unveiled on March 29 in New York.
Both the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus will have the home button and fingerprint scanner placed in the Super AMOLED display. Earlier this week, Samsung Display posted TV ads on its YouTube channel showing off its new AMOLED display. The bezel-less smartphone shown in the videos is said to be the Galaxy S8 or its reference design.
