Sony PSVR Blocks PlayStation 4 Pro From Using HDR Feature

Updated on

Excitement is building as we approach the launch of the PSVR, the new virtual reality headset from Sony.

Now the company has released a PSVR FAQ which aims to deal with queries from the public. Within the FAQ, Sony reveals that the PSVR will have to be unplugged if you want to use HDR features on the PS4 Pro.

PSVR doesn’t support HDR

This is because the processing box that is needed to run the PSVR doesn’t have HDR support. As a result you will need to unplug the PSVR device if you want to use HDR with your PS4 Pro.

The news can be explained in the following way. The processing box is essentially an HDMI splitter which receives HDMI from your PS4 and splits it to the PSVR headset and the TV. This allows other people to watch as you play a game using the headset. However the fact that the processing box doesn’t support HDR means that it can’t send HDR images to your television set.

If you want to use HDR with the PS4 you need to remove the PSVR box and plug the console directly into your TV.

Excitement building as October 13 launch approaches

The Sony FAQ also contains some interesting information. It reveals that 3D audio will only be able to work with wired headsets, and this is not affected by which brand of headset you own. Sony recommends that you turn off surround sound in your headset when you are playing in virtual reality.

The new PSVR is scheduled for launch on October 13. It will be accompanied by a demo disc with 8 trial games on it, including Driveclub VR, EVE: Valkyrie, and RIGS Mechanized Combat League.

It might seem strange that virtual reality technology will be launched with a physical media disc, but the thinking is sound. This will stop people from crashing Sony servers as they try to download demo games after buying their new headset.

How can you get your hands on the new Sony virtual reality headset?

Most pre-orders for the virtual reality headset have sold out. However 350 Best Buy stores across the U.S. will open early for those who want to get their hands on the headset. This could be the best option for U.S.-based gamers who missed out on pre-orders.

At a later date both Resident Evil 7 VR mode and Batman Arkham VR will be released for the PSVR as timed exclusives. The virtual reality headset will cost $399, which some may find to be a bit steep.

However the package includes demo games, so you’ll be able to play with your new toy without paying extra for games. Another demo title is Driveclub VR, which Sony says is much better than the original driving game which got a muted reception from gamers.

Virtual reality gaming is an increasingly important part of the industry, and various companies are investing in the technology. Sony continues to fight it out with arch rival Microsoft in the games console market, with the PS4 Pro facing off against the Xbox One S.

Whichever your favorite gaming system, things are getting pretty exciting in the gaming world. Not only will we soon see two major new consoles, Nintendo is also working on its upcoming Nintendo NX device. With a raft of new machines and the increasing prevalence of virtual reality, it’s a great time to be a gamer.
