According to the latest rumors Samsung may put a curved screen on the Galaxy S8 smartphone, which is set to be released in 2017.
It is thought that the curved screen will follow on from a similar design used on the recently-released Galaxy Note 7. The Korean tech giant put a curved display unit on its new flagship phablet, and it may do the same on the Galaxy S8 in order to create a new trend in smartphone design, writes Mina Nami for ASZ News.

Vine Report has published an article in which it claims that the curved edge display may be introduced on all upcoming Samsung devices, including the Galaxy S series. Samsung previously released curved models of other handsets under the “Edge” tag, but recent models have done away with this name. It is thought that Samsung will gauge customer response to the curved display on the Galaxy Note 7 before evaluating whether to bring curved screens to other upcoming devices.
“Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen),” said Koh Dong-jin, the president of the tech giant’s mobile business.
In addition to the curved display rumors, Vine Report mentions other Galaxy S8 specs. The upcoming smartphone will reportedly ship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 SoC and a 4K, UHD display.
Next-generation chipset could use 10nm process
It is thought that the Galaxy S8 may be the first Samsung handset to use a new 10nm chip, compared to the 14nm chip used on the existing Galaxy S7. This could lead to a performance boost as the new chip will pack in more transistors, and it has been rumored that Samsung is already testing the new processor.
The Exynos 9985 processor was mentioned by a renowned leaker known only by the Weibo username IceUniverse,. A move to a 10nm process would allow for improved performance and power efficiency.
Samsung has apparently reached clock rates of 4GHz using the Exynos 8895, but the new chipset will likely be limited to a lower clock rate when it hits the market. Of course clock rate is not the only factor which affects the performance of a chipset, but at first glance the new chip sounds impressive.
Samsung continues to battle with rival Apple
All of the signs are pointing to the idea that Samsung will launch the Galaxy S8 in 2017 as a major part of its product lineup. However the Korean tech giant has not made any sort of official announcement regarding the smartphone, so it is best to take these rumors with a pinch of salt.
Recent rumors have suggested that Samsung is working on five high-end devices for 2017. One revolutionary design will reportedly come in the shape of a foldable Galaxy X, but other more predictable arrivals include the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8.
The new arrivals will be part of Samsung’s ongoing battle with its biggest rival in the smartphone market, namely Apple. The Galaxy Note 7 was recently released around a month before the predicted launch of the Apple iPhone 7, and the two phones are likely to be the biggest selling flagship smartphones.
A possible Samsung Galaxy S8 would be released at around the same time as the 2017 edition of the iPhone, which many people believe will include some major design innovations. Could both Samsung and Apple introduce curved displays next year?
