Philando Castile Shooting: Aftermath Caught On Facebook Video

Updated on

The aftermath of a fatal police shooting in Minnesota has apparently been caught on video.

Police in St Paul have confirmed that 32-year-old Philando Castile died after being shot by a policeman during a traffic stop. The video, which apparently shows the immediate aftermath of the shooting, has caused outrage online, according to The Guardian.

Philando Castile – Video footage shows incident similar to police report

The latest fatal police shooting took place after an officer stopped a car with Castile, a woman and a child inside. Castile was shot while inside the car, and local media have since reported that he died from his wounds.

Family members have since told the media that Castile informed the officer that he had a licensed firearm inside the car before attempting to take out his wallet. The video, which was posted on Facebook Live on Wednesday night, shows a situation very similar to the one described by police reports.

Footage shows a woman sitting inside a vehicle next to a man who is covered in blood. The woman can be heard saying that the officer shot her boyfriend.

Woman claims boyfriend informed officer of licensed firearm

Later in the video the woman can be heard saying that the officer asked her boyfriend to take out his license and registration. She says the man informed the officer that the documents were in his wallet, and that he also had a licensed pistol in his car.

“The officer said, ‘Don’t move,”’ the woman in the video says. “As he was putting his hands back up, the officer shot him in the arm four or five times.”

The officer can later be heard saying: “I told him not to reach for it. I told him to get his hand out.”

Jon Mangseth, interim police chief in St Anthony, told the press that in the leadup to the shooting the officer initiated a traffic stop at around 9pm on Wednesday. The incident took place in Falcon Heights, which is a suburb of St Paul. The officer involved is now on paid administrative leave, said Mangseth, who informed the press that this is standard practice.

Philando Castile – Victim’s mother criticizes “silent war” against African Americans

On Thursday the victim’s mother Valerie Castile told CNN that her son had done nothing “to be shot down like this.” He was simply “black in the wrong place,” she continued, and had become another victim in “a silent war against African American people.”

She told CNN that her instructions to her son had always been to “comply” if he were pulled over by police. Castile is incensed that she has not been allowed to identify the body of her son. She has been told to wait until after an autopsy has been performed.

Mangseth told the press that he did not have “much information” on what caused the shooting. However he did say that neither the woman nor the child were hurt in the incident.

Although Mangseth said that he was aware of the existence of the video, he declined to comment further.

The fatal shooting in Minnesota comes hot on the heels of another police shooting in Baton Rouge, Lousiana, which took place on Tuesday morning. There have been protests across the United States related to the continued deaths of black men at the hands of police officers.
