Canon Unveils 80D, Updated PowerShot Cameras

Updated on

Canon has continued to improve its SLR video offering with the new 80D, which features an autofocus system among other features.

Videographers will also be pleased to hear that the 80D also includes a headphone jack for audio monitoring and the capability to increase the ISO to 25600 when recording. Although they are not new features the camera also has a vari-angle touch-screen LCD and 1080p video, but frame rate can now be increased to 60 fps.

Canon 80D provides upgrades for videographers

There is no 4K video recording or clean video signal output over HDMI, but the autofocus feature is a real boon. It can shoot at a maximum of 7fps with continuous autofocus on. The resolution has been boosted to 24 megapixels, and the body is compatible with EF-S and EF lenses.

Canon has priced the 80D at $1,199 body only, and the new camera will ship in March. It is powered by a Digic 6 image processor and will be available with a new kit lens, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. It has a more powerful USM focus monitor that is still silent.

The 80D and the new 18-135mm lens are available as a bundle for $1,799, while the lens itself will sell for $599.99. Videographers might also want to invest in Canon’s first ever microphone, the Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1. It has a standard 3.5mm connection, mounts in a shoe, and also has a windscreen. It will be available from June onward for $249.99.

Compact camera range also receives a boost

Alongside the 80D, Canon will also release a pair of new compact cameras. The PowerShot G7 X will get a makeover as the new G7 X Mark II. Although many of the specs remain the same it has a few upgraded features such as an LCD screen which tilts down, an upgraded lens control ring, and a reversed EV compensation dial.

The camera also uses a new Digic 7 image processor and is better at tracking subjects. The G7 X Mark II will ship in May and is on sale for $699.99.

Canon is also releasing a new pocket-friendly superzoom. The PowerShot SX720 HS will replace the SX710 HS, and boasts an increased zoom range thanks to its 40x (24-960mm) lens. The new camera will support in-camera battery charging via USB, but will also still support external charging.

The list price of the SX720 HS is $379.99 and the camera will ship in March.
