Intel’s First Skylake Chips Due In Early August [REPORT]

Updated on

Intel will soon launch the first of its new Skylake chips based on the new architecture. Citing knowledgeable sources, a report from PCWorld claims that the new chips will be available in the first week of August, and will be high-end gaming chips.

A high-end gaming chip

As per the report, first Skylake chips will be for high-end gaming, and will be launched on or before August 7 at the Gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany, which is scheduled from August 5th to 9th.

At its Intel Developer Forum (IDC) in San Francisco between August 18 to 20, the chip maker will offer more technical details related to Skylake. At the event, Intel will detail how Skylake will enrich the Windows 10 experience, which will be available from July 29th.

With Skylake, Intel aims to make PCs more user-friendly. So, going forward, Intel could come up with “Wire free” technologies in Skylake. Intel said on an IDF technical session page that the first Skylake chips are “Sixth Generation Core” processor, offering “great performance and reduced power consumption.”

Some Skylake features are already known. Last month, ASUS unveiled its mini desktops and all-in-ones powered by Skylake supporting new DDR4 memory and USB 3.1 data transfer protocol. Separately, PCs equipped with Skylake will have ports based on Thunderbolt 3. Other features such as new virtualization, boot, system management and lockdown will be detailed in the technical sessions.

Intel Skylake-based PCs arriving soon

Intel has been working hard to get its Skylake into the PCs so that it can put a full-stop on the struggling Broadwell chips, which have been delayed owing to the problems in the 14-nanometer process. The chip maker has addressed the issue to ensure that Skylake reaches customers on-time.

For now, Intel is not sharing any details on the availability of Skylake chips, but it seems likely that Skylake-powered desktops and laptops will be available for order soon. Sometime later this year, PC makers such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Asus will ship Skylake-based Windows 10 PCs. It is not known when the new chips will be made available to the Macs.

Intel’s Skylake will be competing with AMD’s Carrizo, which have already reached PC makers. AMD is pushing ahead to come up with its next-gen chips based on a CPU core code-named Zen, which are expected to be available by late next year.
