Galaxy S6 To Come In 2 Versions With A Round Smartwatch At MWC

Updated on

Samsung is planning to launch not one, but two variants of its next flagship Galaxy S6 at the Mobile World Congress in early March. The Korean electronics giant reportedly showcased its new device to select partners and telecom carriers behind the doors at the Consumer Electronics Show last week. Inside sources familiar with the company’s plan told Business Insider that one model will be rolled out with a metal design.

Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge to hit the stores in April

That will be a major departure from the usual plastic design Samsung has used in previous Galaxy S series phones. Sources did not clarify whether the new Galaxy S6 will have a full unibody metal case or simply metal accents. However, a recently leaked metal frame for the device points to a unibody chassis. The second Galaxy S6 variant in the works features a curved display. That’s in line with previous reports that Samsung will also release a limited edition Galaxy S6 Edge, similar to the Galaxy Note Edge.

The two models of Galaxy S6 will be a major step in Samsung’s move to a more premium design. Both versions are set to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress, and hit the stores in April. Moreover, Samsung will also release a new smartwatch with a round screen, similar to the Moto 360 smartwatch that was praised by critics for its design. Business Insider says the smartwatch will likely get Tizen software.

Samsung needs to try something different

The Galaxy S6 will likely sport Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 or Exynos 7420 chipset, along with 3GB RAM. The device is expected to feature a 5.5-inch Quad HD display with 1,440×2,560, 20MP main camera and Android 5.0 Lollipop. Samsung is designing the Galaxy S6 from scratch under the Project Zero, suggesting that it will be a radical overhaul from its predecessors.

Samsung needs to try something different and appealing to attract customers as it continues to lose market share. The company’s premium devices are hit hard by Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, while Chinese vendors like Xiaomi are eating into its market share in the low-end segment. During the third-quarter of 2014, Samsung’s smartphone market share stood at 24.4%, down from 32.1% in the same quarter in 2013.
