Groupon Inc Sold 40,000 Ugly Sweaters This Holiday Season So Far

Updated on

Groupon Inc (NASDAQ:GRPN) succeeded at selling 40000 ugly sweaters since mid-October. As informed by the e-commerce giant on Friday, they made good sales between the Cyber Monday and Black Friday, and the Ugly sweaters were the most sold ones between the two major shopping days.

Groupon making full use of holidays

Since October, about two dozen ugly sweater deals have been run by the coupon site as informed by spokesman Nicolas Halliwell. These deals include the ones aimed for toddlers and dogs. The company even conducted a two-day ugly sweater event in mid-November on its site, and more than 20 different styles were featured in it. Groupon even listed NFL Ugly Sweaters, at $59.99 a pop, and days later the item was “no longer available.”

“There’s such a paucity of innovative clothing this season that Ugly Sweaters are winning the day,” said Wendy Liebmann, CEO of the consultancy WSL Strategic Retail. It seems that this holiday season, in the paucity of major must have items, retailers have tried the humor twist, which has certainly paid-off atleast for Groupon.

According to Web-sentiment firm General Sentiment, online mention of ugly and tacky sweaters or ugly-sweater-themed parties, from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, was up 29.3% compared to the same period last year. A massive size has been gained by the ugly sweaters and this has led to a sort of brand extension into suiting.

Ugly sweaters – what is it?

The ugly sweaters are of a typical eye catching style. The sweaters generally feature bright colors in large numbers and motif that includes varying items like a reindeer, Christmas Tree or menorahs even.

There are a number of online retailers besides Groupon offering the ugly sweater, and these are Amazon, Walmart and Target. Upscale department-store chains Macy’s and Nordstrom have more of this stuff, and they also sell the kits for making the ugly sweaters. Near the entrance of a J.C. Penney Co.’s Manhattan store, the ugly sweaters were featured prominently in the front window display, Thursday night. A label of ‘Ugly Christmas Sweater’ was put on a blue sweater by the retailer across the front.

Ugly NFL sweaters have become a huge success, and this has led to the release of brand specific versions by the National Hockey League, the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball.
