Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT), the second largest discount retailer in the United States is offering free shipping on all orders starting today until December 20.

Target Corporation expects incremental sales

The decision of Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) to offer free shipping is early given the fact that the holiday shopping season officially starts during the Thanksgiving weekend.

Market observers believe that the strategy could strengthen its competitiveness against rivals such as Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT).

Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) believed that one of the most important factors considered by customers when shopping online is free shipping. The retailer observed that its permanent free shipping strategy for those spending at least $50 through its online store had strong reception.

Kathee Tesija, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer at Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) said, “We know shipping costs play a big role in online purchasing decisions. She added, “We believe our free shipping offer will create excitement and incremental sales for Target.”

Other initiatives for the holiday season

Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) also revealed other initiatives for the holiday season including irresistible products, unbeatable value and guest-friendly services.

Brian Cornell, chairman and CEO of Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) said the company is “poised to deliver an unparalleled holiday shopping season. We’ve been building capabilities that put us in a strong starting position, including the right digital tools and a broad assortment of unique, on-trend merchandise.”

Cornell is confident that the value proposition of the company would be incomparable; its promotions are compelling and customers would have exceptional shopping experience.

Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) said more than 65,000 items are now available for store pick-up on Target.com. In addition, the company can fulfill 80% of online orders within one hour.

The company will also launch its Wish List app on October 31. Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) said its Wish List app was a modern, digital version of the tradition of creating holiday wish list for parents and kids. The app offers an augmented reality feature that works with its Kids’ Gifting catalog.
