10th Annual Value Investing Congress Keynote speeches

Former Goldman Sachs general manager and Omega Advisors founder Leon Cooperman will answer the question, “Are Equities Still the Best House in the Financial Asset Neighborhood?” a throwback to his 2012 assessment that proved to be perfectly positioned for the 2013 bull market. For value investors who want to do more than just analyze corporate fundamentals, Jeffrey Smith of Starboard Value will give a talk on “Using Board Dynamics to Enhance Shareholder Returns,” giving you a broader picture of what investors can really accomplish when they engage with management. David Hurwitz, partner at SC Fundamental, will build on the work he presented at the 9th VIC with a talk on “Activist Investing in Korea,” Kerrisdale Capital Management managing partner Sahm Adrangi will cover “Misunderstood Situations” which sounds like it could be an explanation of Special Situations investing, while Atlantic Investment Management founder Alexander Roepers will give a more general view on “Global Value Investment Opportunities.”

Workshop: How to find hidden value

The pre-congress workshop, titled How to Find Hidden Value, is going to dig into the fundamentals of value investing this year, covering “intrinsic value, margin of safety, value traps and more.” After a light breakfast, Kase Capital founder Whitney Tilson will give the first of a two-part talk on “How to Pick Investment Winners, Avoid Value Traps, and Decipher Financial Statements.” Tilson’s main address will be followed up by three shorter presentations (about 45 minutes each) that home in on more specific topics: Marcelo Lima, managing member of Heller House will go in-depth into a specific scenario with “Brute Force Attack: a case study,” followed by Eriksen Capital Management founder Tim Eriksen’s explanation of how to find value outside the megacaps that grab headlines with “Smaller Stocks, Bigger Opportunities,” and managing editor of Agora Financial Chris Mayer will move beyond domestic markets with “How to Uncover Value Abroad.” Tilson will bring it all back together with the second part of “How to Pick Investment Winners, Avoid Value Traps, and Decipher Financial Statements” before breaking up the official events and heading to a cocktail part where you can meet like-minded investors and talk about what you’ve learned.
