Harley-Davidson Recalls Over 66K Motorcycles; Stock Falls

Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) issued a recall of 66,421 Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles from the 2014 model year amid the peak of the riding season.

The company said the motorcycles being called back were manufactured between July 1, 2013 and May 7 with anti-lock brakes. Harley Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) cautioned that the front wheels of the recalled motorcycles could stop anytime without warning.

The stock price of the Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) declined 1.51% to 68 per share at the time of this writing around 1:33 P.M. in New York.

Minor injuries reported

The Wisconsin-based motorcycle manufacturer explained that the front brake lines of the recalled Touring and CVO Touring motorcycle models were not installed properly. The technical problem could lead to a fatal accident if the motorcycle is moving at high speed.

Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) became aware of the issue when a few customers who experienced the technical problem claimed warranty for their motorcycles. According to CNBC, the improperly installed frontline brakes caused five crashes with two minor injuries.

The front wheel of the motorcycle suddenly stops when the brake line in front is pinched in between the fuel tank and the frame, which causes the front brake fluid pressure to increase.

Harley-Davidson’s highest priority is safety

Tony Wilcox, the general manager of Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) emphasized, “The safety of our customers is our highest priority. We have identified potential safety issues and are moving quickly to notify out customers and dealers.”

He apologized to customers and pointed out the seriousness of the problems. He encouraged the owners of the recalled Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles to get their bikes inspected and repaired as soon as possible.

Wilcox added that Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) proud of providing delight and satisfaction to its customers, and the company wants to offer them with superior quality goods and services as well as enhancing their user experience.

Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) said dealers would replace brake lines and install straps to keep them in place.

Previous problem

Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) experienced a problem on the hydraulic clutch system of the same motorcycle models last year. Owners had a problem disengaging the clutch of the of the motorcycle. The company recalled 29,000 motorcycles with defective hydraulic clutch system.
