Facebook Inc NASDAQ:FB’s app has the highest number of smartphone users in the United States, according to a mobile app report by comScore. The report reveals that most of the time spent on mobile devices is absorbed by social networking, entertainment and messaging apps. Also just a few apps are regularly used the, while rest of them are just ignored.

Social networking giant Facebook along with other biggies, such as Google Inc NASDAQ:GOOG NASDAQ:GOOGL, Apple Inc. NASDAQ:AAPL, Yahoo! Inc. NASDAQ:YHOO, and Amazon.com, Inc. NASDAQ:AMZN, were the topmost apps used on smartphones. Even though Facebook is the most-used app on smartphones, Google apps dominated the list, overpowering around other 2 million apps available on Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

Facebook is being used by 115 million people monthly, followed by Google-owned YouTube, with 83.4 million users, according to the report. Instagram, the photo sharing app acquired by Facebook, sits at the eighth spot, with 46.6 million users, followed by Apple Maps and the Yahoo! Finance app.

The big tech companies take it all, as Facebook owns Facebook Messenger and Instagram, which are among the top 10, and Google owns YouTube, Gmail, and Google Maps, concentrating the app power in just few hands.

Facebook loved by all age groups

In terms of hours spent on the mobile app, Facebook dominates again. The company holds a 14.8% share in the 18-24 age bracket. On a category level, Facebook is again a leader with 25% of the share, followed by games and radio. It is interesting to see that every age group uses Facebook, and this similarity is not seen in other apps’ usage. Among all other age groups, those aged between 25 and 34 years use Facebook the most, totaling 18%. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself belongs to that same age group. However, every age group accounts more than 14% of the share.

According to ComScore, one-third of all United States users download at least one app per month. ComScore also worked on the total ad spend on various platforms, with total digital ad spend at $50 billion, mobile ad spend at $30 billion and PC ad spend at $20 billion.The report expects that mobile ad revenue will come in at $15 billion in the United States in 2014.
