AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 Active Released

Updated on

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) just introduced the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active smartphone. This new phone is designed from the ground up for those who live active outdoor lives. Since the Galaxy S5 was already water-proof and dust-resistant, the company needed something more for the next generation Galaxy Active phone. The new Galaxy S5 Active adds a shock resistance feature and a convenience button that makes it easy to access apps on the go.

Galaxy S5 Active appearance and specifications

The phone comes in three choices of colors, including Camo Green, Titanium Grey, and Ruby Red. This model looks a little more chunky and rugged, although it is just  0.33mm taller and 0.8mm thicker than the current Galaxy flagship phone.

Other specifications for the phone include a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, 2800mAh battery, Wi-Fi, 4G, NFC and 16 megapixel rear camera/2 megapixel front camera.

Like the Galaxy S5, this phone features a rear-mounted heart rate monitor. Unlike the current Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) flagship phone, this model does not include a fingerprint sensor.

It is not known yet whether Samsung Galaxy S5 active is as durable as it claims to be, or if the modifications are more cosmetic in nature. The phone does, however, appear ready to rumble, given the rubberized strips on the top and bottom as well as rear covered bolts. That said, since this new model does not really have any features to separate it from the current Galaxy flagship, the main selling point for the phone is its active athletic appeal.

Galaxy S5 Active’s price and contract

The Galaxy S5 Active starts at $200 with a two-year contract at AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T). The monthly price starts $27.50 a month for AT&T Next 18 and $35.75 with AT&T Next 12.

Although the Galaxy S5 Active won’t likely ever enjoy as much success as Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s flagship phone, it still serves as a useful alternative, especially for those who want a phone designed for a more active lifestyle.
