Residents of an Atlanta suburb are reeling this morning after a deadly shooting at a local FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) warehouse. Police told local media in Atlanta that a shooting was called in at the FedEx facility just outside of Atlanta right before 6 a.m. Eastern. Emergency personnel took six patients in various conditions to a local hospital. A spokesperson for the hospital said some of those victims could walk off the ambulance, while others were immediately taken in for surgery. At least one of the victims is said to be in critical condition.
FedEx releases statement on the shooting
The Chicago Tribune reports that a spokesperson for FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) told media that they are cooperating with investigators. The shipping company said their main concern is their employees’ safety and wellbeing, as well as the conditions of all others affected by the shooting. A representative from FedEx called at least one employee to tell him that he didn’t need to arrive at work on time. A manager also called one of the drivers who works at the facility and told the worker that there had been a shooting. According to the driver, the security guard was one of those who had been shot.
Hundreds of police officers from numerous agencies reported to the scene. Police say the investigation is still active. According to ABC News, federal officials from multiple agencies responded to the scene. Bomb technicians from the FBI and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents also responded.
Alleged shooter’s name not released
Police have not yet released the name of the person they believe to be the gunman. CNN reports that the person was believed to be an employee at the FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) facility. Police said they found a shotgun on the man’s body when they found him and that it was the only weapon he had.
The facility where the shooting occurred was a large warehouse covering half a million square feet. The local 911 center received multiple 911 calls about the incident when it occurred.
