Amazon Smartphone: What To Expect [RUMORS]

Updated on

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has been offering Kindles for years now, so analysts and experts have for long been expecting a possible Kindle-like smartphone from the company. Amazon has been denying the rumors of it working on a phone or having any plans to release a smartphone anytime soon. Still, analysts and industry experts keep coming out with rumors related to the Amazon phone.

The following is a roundup of some of the most recent rumors surrounding the purported Amazon phone.

Amazon phone with six cameras

A couple of weeks back, Tech blog BGR citing KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) will debut its phone in three to six months. The report also claimed that the device would have six cameras, which will be used for taking snaps and gesture controls.

In October of last year, a report from the Financial Times noted that Amazon and HTC were collaborating to develop three new phones, and all of them are likely to be Amazon-branded devices. The report stated that the devices are in the closing stage of production, and the online retailer plans to launch them in 2014. However, both companies have denied any such rumors. There is a good chance that HTC might help Amazon to develop its first phone as the Taiwanese firm did help Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) to come out with its only phone, the HTC First.

3D device for free

In October, a blog from TechCrunch speculated that Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is working on two phones. The higher end version, codenamed Smith, is expected to have unique software that makes the operating system appear 3D. The blog states that the device would have four cameras, one on the each corner, to monitor user’s eye and head movements for the 3D effect.

Last year, in September, a report from The Information mentioned that the Amazon phone would be offered for free, and the company plans to earn money from the download of apps, book, movie, and TV show purchases. The company also planned to make money by promoting special offers and ads, similar to that in Kindle line. Some of the Kindle models are offered at a discount, but are loaded with advertisements, called Special Offers, which help Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) to make money.
