Internet Speed Rose 10 Percent Worldwide: Akamai

The State of the Internet report from Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM) indicated that the average internet speed increased 10% to 3.6 megabits per second (Mbps) worldwide during the third quarter from the internet speed in the second quarter of 2013.

However, Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM) found that the global average peak connection speed dropped 5.2% to 17.9 Mbps.

Korea leads internet speed race

According to the firm, South Korea has the highest average connection speed at 22.1 Mbps, but ranked second when it comes to peak connection speed with 63.6 Mbps. Hong Kong still holds the position with the highest average peak connection speed at 65.4 Mbps, but ranked third in terms of average connection speed with 12.5 Mbps.

Japan has 13.3 Mbps average connection speed (ranked second) and 52 Mbps average peak connection speed (ranked third)

The Netherlands has 12.5 Mbps average connection speed and 39.6 Mbps average peak connection speed while the Czech Republic has 11.3 Mbps average connection speed and 34.8 average peak connection speed.

The United States ranked 8th globally with 9.8 Mbps average connection speed and ranked 13th when it comes to average peak connection speed with 37 Mbps. Canada has 8.8 Mbps average connection speed and 34.8 Mbps average peak connection speed.

Korea has highest broadband adoption rate

The report showed that the adoption of high broadband (>10 Mbps) increased by 31%. Korea remained with the highest level of high broadband adoption globally with a growth rate of 70%. In terms of global broadband adoption (>4 Mbps), the growth rate was 5.8% quarter-over-quarter. Korea also holds the highest adoption rate of 94%.

The global adoption rate for >10 Mbps broadband was 19% and >4Mbps broadband was 53%.

In a statement, David Belson, editor of the “State of the Internet said, “In the third quarter of 2013, we observed that long-term growth in average and average peak connection speeds remained strong, as did growth in global broadband and high broadband adoption rates.”

Belson added, “We believe these trends point to continued improvement in the quality and performance of Internet connectivity in countries around the world.”
