Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) issued an apology to Yahoo Mail users due to the prolonged inaccessibility of the service caused by a hardware problem on one of its mail data centers. Separately, Flickr experienced a brief outage this morning.
Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) apologized to users who could access their Yahoo Mail accounts since Monday night, and promised that the problem will be fixed in the afternoon today.
Issue identified, but tough to fix
Jeffrey Bonfort, SVP of CommunicationProducts at Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) that the one of the mail data centers of the company is experiencing hardware problem. According to him, since Monday around 10:27 in the evening (PST), some users were unable to access their emails until today.
Bonforte said, “The issue has been harder to fix than we originally expected.” He added that dozens of people are working around the clock to resolve the issue. “We believe our current efforts will restore our user’s access to their inboxes by 3 P.M. PST today.”
Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) will provide updates regarding the issue through its @YahooMail Twitter account.
Based on the company’s mail forum, more than a thousand users were unable to access their e-mails. Yahoo Mail is one of the most important products of the company with more than 100 million active users daily. More than 1,200 users wrote comments about the Yahoo Mail outage.
Last October, Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) redesigned Yahoo Mail. The new interface looks like Gmail, but many users did not like the changes including some of the employees of the company, according to a previous report from AllThingsD. Improving Yahoo Mail is one of the top priorities of CEO Marissa Mayer.
In a separate report, Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) is also experiencing problems with Flickr. The photo sharing service experienced a brief outage (about an hour) this morning. Some users reported the outage via Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR). Users were receiving a message that reads, “Inactivity Timeout. Description: Too much time has passed without sending any data for document.”
