iPad 6 To Challenge Galaxy Note 12.2

Updated on

The iPad 6 rumors have started popping up only a few weeks after the release of the iPad Air and iPad mini with retina display. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) announced the 9.7-inch and 7.9-inch tablets in October. There have been consistent reports that the iPad 6, dubbed iPad Pro, is likely to have a much bigger screen.

iPad 6 specs

The iPad 6 is expected to sport a larger, 12.9-inch display. PadNews reported that the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is working on five different prototypes of the upcoming tablets with its Asian partner Foxconn. The 12.9-inch iPad 6 is rumored to come in two versions, one with 2K display and another with 4K. Last month, supply chain sources told The Korea Times that a first-tier display maker has started producing 12.9-inch retina display for Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL).

With a large display size, the Cupertino-based company will have to work on increasing the screen resolution. The 4K version of iPad 6 is rumored to have a 4096 x 3072 resolution with 397ppi pixel density. The current iPad Air has a pixel density of 264ppi. The iPad is is expected to feature the 64-bit A7 processor.

The increase in display size will be perfect for industrial application purposes and for watching media. However, it raises questions about portability. The 12.9-inch iPad 6 will be similar in size as 13-inch MacBook Pro. Those who want a 12.9-inch iPad would consider it a compact alternative to MacBook. There have been rumors that it will have a detachable Bluetooth keyboard.

The iPad 6 is likely to compete with much hyped Samsung Galaxy Note 12.2. The 12.2-inch Galaxy Note is rumored to sport a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, Android 4.4 KitKat OS, 8MP rear camera, and 3GB RAM.

iPad 6 release date

The iPad 6 will reportedly go for sale in 2014. The 2K model is expected to be announced in April 2014, followed by the high resolution version in October 2014. The Samsung Galaxy Note 12.2 is speculated to hit the markets in Q1 2014.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares jumped 0.80% to $548.84 at 10:13 AM EST.
