Galaxy S5 May Face Stiff Competition From LG G3

Updated on

Rumors surrounding the Galaxy S5 are heating up as the year closes. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s next flagship smartphone Galaxy S5 is likely to hit the markets in Q1 2014. Rumor has it that its biggest challenger will be Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s upcoming iPhone 6. But reports suggest that the Galaxy S5 may find another big competitor in LG Electronics’ G3.

Can LG G3 really challenge Galaxy S5?

A concept design of the G3 suggests that the device will sport a 5.5-inch screen with 2560 x 1440 resolution, which is called QHD. The Galaxy S5 is expected to come with a 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution. LG’s G3 is rumored to feature a “true” octa-core processor. The Current octa-core Exynos processor used in Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) devices isn’t true in the real sense. That’s because only four of its eight cores work simultaneously depending on the task.

The Galaxy S5 is likely to include a 16MP camera with ISOCELL technology. This camera will allow users to capture better images in low light environment. The LG G3 is also rumored to feature a 16MP camera. However, it’s still unclear if the G3 will have a technology that lets users take improved images in low light conditions. If the rumors are true, the G3 will be much better than its predecessor G2, which has a 1080p display, quad-core Snapdragon processor, 5.2-inch screen and 13MP camera, and optical image stabilization.

Galaxy S5 will still have better features

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s Galaxy S5 is expected to challenge the HTC M8 and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone 6. The Galaxy S5 may have some really exciting features that can give it an edge over others. The Korean electronics giant has filed a patent that will improve its ChatOn messaging service. So, experts believe the ChatOn in Galaxy S5 may allow users to make multi-person conference calls. The device is likely to deploy at least 3GB RAM with 64-bit Exynos processor.

The Galaxy S5 may also feature an iris eye scanner to enhance security. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) introduced its TouchID sensor with the iPhone 5S. If the Galaxy S5 really comes with the eye scanner, it will become one of the most secure devices in the world. Moreover, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) is reportedly working to resolve the issue of scratches on its device. The company has developed a technology to coat the Galaxy S5 body with a “diamond-like” scratch-proof material.

The Korean company is developing its own Tizen operating system. So, there have been reports that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) may finally ditch the Android operating system. But experts say the company may launch the Galaxy S5 in two versions, one with Tizen and another with the latest Android 4.4 Kit Kat. It will give users more options.
