BlackBerry Stock Recommendations Ranked: Timing Is Everything

Updated on

It’s no secret that BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) has struggled in the market over the past few years. And, while some analysts have abandoned the stock all together, analyst James Moorman has played the stock to his advantage. With advice to both SELL and BUY BlackBerry James’s 70% success rate of recommendations combined with his +7.9% average return over S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) has earned him the 165 spot out of 2317 analysts.

Concerns about BlackBerry Z10 model

When the Z10 models were set to launch, James recommended SELL BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) due to his concern over projected losses for the company. At the time James stated, “We are concerned about carrier support for the Z10 U.S. launch, with only 3 of the top 4 carriers selling it. Several new handsets expected to launch this spring and summer could dilute the Z10’s impact. We believe many die-hard users may wait for the Q10 (which has a QWERTY keyboard), which we expect in May or June.” James was correct in his prediction and ended up earning +1.5% over the S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX).

BlackBerry PlayBook vs Apple iPad

Before this, when the overhaul of the new products was just announced, James recommended SELL BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) and was validated again. “We believe the devices and BB10 operating system will be well received. We are also impressed with the split business and personal modes on the software as well as the autocorrect function. However, we believe the new devices will do more to retain existing BlackBerry subscribers than to lure new subscribers.” This time James ended up with +1.3%. Not only did James know when to SELL BlackBerry but his BUY recommendations were also right on the money. James recommended BUY BlackBerry when it came out with its BlackBerry PlayBook to compete with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPad. At the time he said he, “believes RIM will make a positive inroad to the enterprise market with the PlayBook,” a market that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was not focusing on at the time. While he was not thrilled with the size of the screen or the keypad, he did end up with +13.3%!
