Last week it was reported that one of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s brand new iPad Air demo models exploded at a Vodafone store in Australia. Now Mashable’s Adario Strange reports that it wasn’t an iPad Air at all. Sources at Vodafone told the site that it was actually an older iPad model which exploded.
Details on the iPad explosion
The explosion happened last week at a Vodafone store in Canberra, Australia. The iPad reportedly burst into flames, sending out sparks and smoke from the charging port. Customers and employees evacuated the store and no one was hurt. A spokesperson for Vodafone told Mashable over the weekend that it was unclear exactly which of the iPad models exploded. The person knew it was a Retina model, which meant it was either the iPad 3 or the iPad 4. However, the source specified clearly that it was not an iPad Air.
Last week when we did the story, I noticed that some Australian sources reported that it was unclear which iPad model exploded. However, at least one reported that it was the iPad Air. Naturally, we went with the more detailed report, but unfortunately, it was wrong.
Apple investigates the iPad explosion
Representatives from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) reportedly took the iPad in for examination after the explosion. The tablet took some pretty heavy damage. The company will undoubtedly provide a statement on the topic at some point, although it hasn’t yet. It sounds like the issue could have involved overheating. Interestingly enough, Apple’s forums didn’t have any recent reports about the iPad Air overheating, but there are some older ones regarding previous models, particularly the iPad 3 and a few reports about the iPad 4.
Earlier this year Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) blamed Chinese knock-off chargers for a pair of electrocutions which killed two Chinese women. She had picked up her iPhone to use it while it was plugged into the wall and charging.
