According to The Verge, Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) had indicated in the past that the second season of “House of Cards” would be the last one. That season will be pushed out to subscribers next year.

Over the weekend, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said during a keynote speech for Film Independent that they plan to keep the popular show going. He confirmed to Deadline later that they were in the middle of talks to keep it up. The initial deal was for the 26 episodes which became the first two seasons.

Netflix enjoys success with “House of Cards”

“House of Cards” premiered in February, and it was a hit from the very start. The show received nine Emmy nominations, and director David Fincher won the Emmy for best director of a drama series. The show’s executive producer Rick Cleveland said earlier this year that “House of Cards” would not be back at the end of the first 26 episodes. He suggested that Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey, the two stars of the series, would go back to doing feature films instead of working on the show.

Netflix to move into movie production

Sarandos also suggested that Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) could expand its original content production to include movies as well as television shows. He criticized theaters, saying that they ignored the preferences of consumers and stifle innovation by forcing viewers to watch movies at the scheduled times of the theater. He also said tens of millions of dollars are spent advertising to people who might not even live anywhere around a theater and have to wait months to see the film.
