Local U.S. governments lack oversight, and this has led to some individual states or cities behaving less than responsibly with their budgets. The story of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s financial catastrophe is a shining beacon of what can go wrong when local governments have too much power.

As Bloomberg maps out, some states have considerably more governing bodies than others. These additional layers of overhead are dead-weight more often than not.
