Market and Economic News Update:

U.S. stock-index futures largely unchanged: U.S. stock-index futures are pointing to a flat open on Thursday after jobless claims declined more than forecast. Weekly jobless claims fell 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 323,000, according to the Labor Department. Economists were expecting first-time applications for unemployment benefits to fall to 330,000 last week. In other economic news, Automatic Data Processing Inc. reported that private-sectors jobs increased by 176,000 in August, below the 184,000 gain projected by economists. The data on the U.S. labor market came a day ahead of the government’s monthly jobs report.

European markets rise: European markets held gains after both the European Central Bank and the Bank of England kept key interest rates unchanged. The ECB left the interest rate at a record low of 0.5 percent, while the BOE kept its benchmark interest rate at 0.5 percent, and made no changes to its £375 billion asset purchase program. The FTSE 100 (INDEXFTSE:UKX) edged 0.5 percent higher to6506.74 points. The CAC 40 (INDEXEURO:PX1) added 0.4 percent to 3998.52 points, and the DAX (INDEXDB:DAX) gained 0.3 percent to 8220.08. Asian stocks end mixed: Asian markets struggled for direction amid investor caution over a reduction in the U.S. Federal Reserve’s monetary stimulus. The NIKKEI 225 (INDEXNIKKEI:NI225) closed at a one-month high, as the yen weakened following optimistic remarks from the Bank of Japan. The SSE Composite Index (SHA:000001) (Shanghai Composite Index) ended lower after hitting a two-and-a-half week high in the previous trading session. The S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX:XJO) index lost in trade after Australia’s trade balance swung back into the red in July
