Egypt’s interior ministry has said that 543 people have been arrested in the violence that swept the country in the authorities’ crackdown on supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi on Wednesday.
The ministry explained that some of those who were arrested possessed heavy arms, including machine guns.
It added that its forces are “currently facing large numbers of armed terrorist groups in a number of governorates and confronting groups which are targeting police, government and religious installments in an attempt to stir chaos in the country.”
It insisted that its forces will continue with their duty to contain the violence with the least losses possible.
Mohamed Morsi supporters torch three churches in Fayoum
Three churches were torched in Fayoum on Wednesday, no details were provided clarifying who set fire to these churches, eyewitnesses reported.
The Nile Delta governorate also witnessed violent confrontations between the security forces and supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsi near Fayoum’s security headquarters.
An Aswat Masriya eyewitness said that the governor’s resting area was torched and looted. The witness also reported that the governorate’s club and the Friends of the Bible Association were also set to fire.
Eyewitnesses said that Mohamed Morsi’s loyalists also stormed police checkpoints in Fayoum and seized weaponry that belong to the security forces.
Demonstrations and clashes broke out across Egypt after the security forces began their crackdown on the Mohamed Morsi supporters’ protest camps in Cairo earlier today.

Egypt’s interim President Adli Mansour has announced a month-long state of emergency beginning 4 p.m. on Wednesday and mandated the army to assist the police in restoring security and order.
Violence swept the country on Wednesday as the Egyptian authorities began their crackdown on ousted President Mohamed Morsi’s supporters.
Ninety-five people were killed in the crackdown, the health ministry said.
A statement by the presidency said that it mandated the armed forces and the police to do what they can to restore order while protecting lives as well as public and private property.

Daughter of Muslim Brotherhood’s Beltagi shot dead
Senior Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed al-Beltagi’s daughter was shot dead on Wednesday during the crackdown on the Mohamed Morsi supporters’ protest camp in Rabaa al-Adwiya Square which started earlier today, the Brotherhood’s official website announced.
Asmaa al-Beltagi, 17, received a bullet in her chest, which caused her immediate death.
Her brother confirmed the news via his Twitter account.
