Bill Ackman’s latest arch nemesis, George Soros, filed his 13F a while ago. Fresh positions from Soros Fund Management include 19.9 million shares of J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP) and 500k call options, making J.C. Penney the fourth largest holding in his public portfolio. Soros also reported 5 million shares of Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF), so speculation that Soros bought Herbalife over July seems to be false since as of June 30, his fund already had a position in the nutrition supplements company.
He also purchased 77,500 shares of Baidu.com, Inc. (ADR) (NASDAQ:BIDU), and 172k shares of Citigroup Inc (NYSE:C). Soros and Loeb also appear to be of the same mind, Soros initiated a position in CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:CF), the fertilizer company that Third Point bought in Q2 and he shared his thesis in the quarterly letter. The Soros Fund acquired 34,308 shares of CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:CF).
Soros increased his position in Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) from 26,800 shares in last quarter to 66,800 shares.
Soros sells gold, Paulson shows mixed moves
While Seth Klarman was buying gold on the dip, George Soros was exiting his gold ETF holdings. Soros sold significant positions in Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSEARCA:GDX) and SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (NYSEARCA:GLD) in Q2. The hedge fund wrapped its holdings in Virgin Media Inc. (NASDAQ:VMED), BMC Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:BMC) and Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS).
Same goes for John Paulson, who reduced his position in SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (NYSEARCA:GLD) by more than 50% while closing all call options in Barrick Gold Corporation (USA) (NYSE:ABX). On the other hand Paulson increased his position in Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE:FCX) by more than 70% while leaving his positions in IAMGOLD Corp (USA) (NYSE:IAG), Allied Nevada Gold Corp. (NYSEMKT:ANV) and Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd (USA) (NYSE:AEM) unchanged.
Paulson also bought more of Hess Corp. (NYSE:HES) and Shire PLC (ADR) (NASDAQ:SHPG) in Q2.
Soros increased positions in Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), which is the fund’s third largest holding, and took up a stake in DISH Network Corp (NASDAQ:DISH), NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) and United Continental Holdings Inc (NYSE:UAL).
