iPhone 6, 5S To Be Released In September?

Updated on

Today we have new reports that the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 5S will both be released in September. Dave Smith of the International Business Times believes that the iPhone 5S will come out two days after the launch of iOS 7 on September 20. He thinks the iPhone 6 will then come out a couple of weeks later, possibly on September 27 or October 4.

iPhone 6, 5S To Be Released In September?

He doesn’t think Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will release both devices on the same day because it would cause very heavy traffic at stores which carry both models. Smith predicts the unveiling of both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 5S will be set for September 10 or sometime in the first half of the month.

The iPhone 6 Is Actually The Cheap Version?

We’ve been hearing lots of rumors that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will release a low cost iPhone this year, and Smith is no different in his expectations. However, he thinks the iPhone 6 will actually be the low cost version. Others have suggested in the past that the iPhone 5S would be the low cost version of the handset. An alternate name he gives for the low cost iPhone 6 is the iPhone Light.

More Alleged Photos Of The Low Cost iPhone 6

Over the weekend, the French website Nowhereelse published more photos it claims are of the low cost version of the iPhone. Mac Rumors picked up the photos on the same day. The photos show what’s supposed to be the back shell of a plastic iPhone. The site does say it’s possible that the photos are of a Chinese iPhone 5 shell clone, although there are other features which make it possible that these cases are actually the low cost iPhone or the iPhone 6, as IBT’s Smith claims. The photos indicate that the device might indeed be offered in multiple colors, as previous rumors have suggested.

Keeping The iPhone 6 Under Wraps

We’ve been seeing various components for the alleged iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S pop up from more than one Chinese supplier, and sources have told The Wall Street Journal that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is simply switching component manufacturers as a way to keep its valuable iPhone secrets under wraps.

Apple has been relying heavily on Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930), its biggest competitor, for many of its components, but it reportedly helped Sharp Corp (TYO:6753) and Toshiba Corp. expand their screen production facilities in an effort to move that component out of Samsung’s reach.

More recently, there have been reports that Apple has signed a deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:TMC) for its processors, so we could see the relationship between Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)  and Apple begin to really fall apart in the lead-up to the iPhone 6 release.
