Market and Economic News Update

U.S. stock-index futures gain: U.S. stock-index futures are pointing to a higher open on Tuesday following better-than-expected home prices data. Investors also await the Conference Board’s latest consumer confidence survey that is scheduled for release at 10 am ET. The consumer confidence index is expected to rise to 72.3 in May from 68.1 in April.

European markets rally: European markets are significantly higher in trade amid positive cues from Asia, where a pullback in the yen spurred a rally for exporters. On the economic front, French consumer confidence fell to 79 in May from figures from 83 in April. This was its lowest level since July 2008, and was much below economists’ expectations of 85. The DAX (INDEXDB:DAX) added 1.2 percent to 8479.43. The FTSE 100 (INDEXFTSE:UKX) surged 1.2 percent, while the CAC 40 (INDEXEURO:PX1) gained 1.4 percent to 4051.22 points. Asian markets end higher: Asian stocks finished higher, with the NIKKEI 225 (INDEXNIKKEI:NI225) up 1.2 percent, following three days of extreme volatility. The SSE Composite Index (SHA:000001) (Shanghai Composite Index) and the HANG SENG INDEX (INDEXHANGSENG:HSI) also added more than a percent, helped by a rally in property and brokerage stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX:XJO) index closed higher for the first time in six days amid broad gains in financial stocks.
