No operating system is perfect from its inception, and such is the case of Android too. The mobile operating system from Google has also seen many ups and downs – some version received praise while some created controversies. Well, it’s all a part of the OS development process.

Android is a platform that has kept evolving. Since 2008, there have been total 39 updates to the OS and of them, nine major system upgrades were released. Android 1.0 is the inception, and then came Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and last but not the least – Jelly Bean.

During this time, there have been many improvements, security updates, the addition of more features, and other general improvements. But apart from all these different version of Android OS, manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Sony, HTC, Motorola, etc too tweak the OS to include their UI, apps and tweaks. In the end, one might wonder which exact version of Android is that smartphone is running?
