In what is likely to be its last attempt at turning its fortunes around, Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM) (TSE:RIM) has set a date for the launch of its new Blackberry 10 system.

RIM Announces Blackberry 10 Launch Event For January 30, 2013

The troubled mobile company announced today the first official launch date of its new Blackberry 10 platform – January 30th, 2013. The global launch, with events in multiple locations, will see Blackberry release two new devices which will be powered by the new Blackberry 10 operating system. However, the company has not said when the new phones will be available in stores.

Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM) (TSE:RIM), which used to be a leader in the smartphone industry, has promised that the latest in the Blackberry series of phones will be faster, smoother, and will have access to a wide catalogue of applications. Although the exact features of the phones are still unconfirmed, there is speculation that one will feature a touch-screen, while the other will feature the traditional QWERTY keyboard that previous models in the Blackberry line have been known for.

Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM) (TSE:RIM) has struggled heavily over the past few years as it has faced stiff competition from iPhone and Android smartphones. Repeated service outages in its Blackberry messaging system have drawn further criticism to the company, and have helped to cause a loss of sales to other smartphone providers.

President and CEO of Research In Motion, Thorsten Heins, offered an upbeat announcement of the new phones: “In building Blackberry 10, we set out to create a truly unique mobile computing experience that constantly adapts to your needs.”

“Our team has been working tirelessly to bring our customers innovative features, combined with a best in class browser, a rich application ecosystem, and cutting-edge multimedia capabilities. All of this will be integrated into a user experience – the Blackberry Flow – that is unlike any smartphone on the market today.”

“Thanks to our strong partnerships with global carriers and a growing ecosystem of developers, we believe our customers will have the best experience possible with Blackberry 10. We are looking forward to getting Blackberry 10 in the hands of our customers around the world.”

Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM) (TSE:RIM) saw good gains recently, with the announcement that carriers were testing its new software, today’s news was also well received and offered a boost to investor confidence.

Currently RIM shares are trading at $8.70.
