Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Research announced the hiring of noted computer scientist Jeannette Wing, two-time head of Carnegie Mellon’s computer science program, as the new Vice President in charge of Microsoft Research International.
The position is a newly created one by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT). Wing will be overseeing Microsoft’s research labs in India, England, and China, while reporting to the company’s chief research officer, Rick Rashid, after she starts at Microsoft in January.
“Jeannette is a leading light in the computer science research community, providing strong leadership both at Carnegie Mellon and at the National Science Foundation (NSF),” said Rashid.
“I have long been impressed by both her profound commitment to world-class research and her service to the research community, and I look forward to working alongside her. It’s a privilege to welcome Jeannette to Microsoft Research.”
Wing is a well-known figure in computer science research, particularly in the areas of formal methods, security, and privacy. Notable positions she has held include head of the Science Department at the Carnegie Mellon University and three years as the assistant director of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate at the NSF. After her time at the NSF, she returned to her post at Carnegie Mellon.
Wing has three post graduate degrees, each of which was earnt at MIT. Her areas of expertise are in the foundations of trustworthy computing, software specification, and verification, concurrent and distributed systems, and programming languages and methodology.
