Sprint Extends LTE Service To More Markets, Now Covers 32 Metro Areas

The carrier is trying to catch up with their rivals, like Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T). The former has the current lead as just last week they exceeded their 400 market target. Overall, they also have more covered markets than any other company.

4G LTE has become the standard of high speed data, thanks to the immense need for downloading and browsing. People demand higher speeds for their smartphones, which are increasingly replacing traditional computers and laptops.

Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S) still has a long way to go, as they have yet to cover major cities. The following is a complete list of covered areas:

  • Atlanta, Ga
  • Athens, Ga

  • Barnstable-Hyannis/Mid-Cape, Mass
  • Calhoun, Ga
  • Carrollton, Ga
  • Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, Ill
  • Gainesville, Ga
  • Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas
  • Gary, Ind
  • Granbury-Hood County, Texas

It’s interesting to point out that Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S) is expanding their service in smaller areas, rather than larger areas.  Except for a few major areas, like Atlanta, Dallas, and Houston, Sprint neglected many key markets. Although there is no word on why the carrier has chosen this path, it could be for a variety of reasons. Perhaps  they wanted to test out a few things with their LTE service before launching it in the more important areas? So far we have no word on when Sprint will further expand their services to larger areas. Hopefully, it will happen in a matter of weeks.
