Netflix Launches A New "Just for Kids" iPad App

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) wants to appeal to families with young children, and that’s why they just launched their “Just for Kids” app for the iPad.

This new app features a selection of movies and television shows that are family friendly. The selections, which target the age range of 12 and under, include Dora the Explorer, Phineas & Ferb, Curious George 2, Spongebob Squarepants, Garfield, and more.

Although this app isn’t really anything different from the previous Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) iPad app, this version was specifically designed for parents who want something completely safe for their kids to watch, without having to worry about their young children accessing inappropriate shows. The “Just for Kids” app also features a new user interface that young children will find aesthetically appealing with over sized images of their favorite characters.

The Just for Kids section of Netflix initially launched on their website in the summer of 2011, and from there it has already expanded as a feature on game consoles, like Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii. It’s also available on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) TV.  This will be the first time Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) adds the Just for Kids application for a tablet computer. It’s also reported that they will launch a similar app for Android tablets.

Netflix’s new move should prove to be a hit with families, who want to keep their young kids entertained on the go, or at home. Now that they have moved their platform to iPad, I wonder when, and if, they will create a special version of the app for the iPhone. Right now, Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) is sitting pretty in the movie/tv rental market, all thanks to their popular pricing plan and ever growing selection of entertainment choices. Creating a special app that targets a key demographic is a beneficial move, that should only propel the company in the long run.
