NYPD Offers Phone Registration At Apple Stores For iPhone 5 Launch

Today is the official release day for the highly anticipated Apple iPhone 5, and it’s a pretty huge event. In New York City, the NYPD is on hand at Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) stores to help register devices, and prevent more thefts from happening.

It’s called the “Anti-Apple Picking Campaign”, and it’s part of the Operation ID, a free program that offers registration of the serial number, along with the owner’s name and sensitive information, for personal electronics of high value, to prevent theft.

The police department made a big push to get all iPhone 5 purchases registered.

Ray Kelly, commissioner of police , said “The theft of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) phones and other handheld devices drove the spike in robberies and larceny this year. Individuals alert to their surroundings are less likely to become victims, and Operation ID will help those whose property is lost or stolen, to get it back.”

Anyone who would like to get their electronic gadget in New York City today, can come to the NYPD personnel at any Apple store to register their devices, even if it’s not an Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone.  The NYPD officers also use their iPhones with iCloud and Find My iPhone in order to help users locate missing or stolen iPhones.

On the opposite end of the country, there is a huge line of people waiting outside of the Apple store in San Francisco. According to CNET, the store keeps replenishing their stock and it seems to be well-stocked.

This is a huge day for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) stores and fans everywhere. I predict record breaking sale results by the end of the day. Although people have seen the sixth generation smartphone, and many more have pre-ordered the iPhone less than two wees ago, today is the day that matters the most, as we can say the iPhone 5 has officially has arrived for all.
