YouTube Hides Video Tags To Stop Algorithm Abuse By Users

In a recent report from The Next Web, YouTube has disable public displays of tags, in order to prevent algorithim abuse.  The YTCreators account summed up the reason Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) made the change nicely, “We made tags private. Please keep providing them with uploads. Viewers didn’t use them, and some abused them.”

The good news is that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) still allows users to add tags to their videos, which helps people discover new videos, even if they don’t show up on the video page.

While this change isn’t really all that significant, and certainly doesn’t affect users all that much, it does show that Google is trying their hardest to ensure that YouTube keeps more quality content, and hopefully decreases poor content.

YouTube is the only video website that’s actually popular enough to make an impact on the internet. If someone wants their videos shown to the entire internet, they publish it on YouTube. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has taken the liberty to enhance the website and create a better user experience for all.  Unfortunately, because they are essentially the only video platform that’s well-known, many people abuse the website to promote their own projects, and this brings the quality of the entire website down. Disabling the tag feature on YouTube was a smart, but mandatory move.

It should be interesting to see what video creators will do in order to garner more views on their pages. I predict it’s going to be a little hard at first to adjust to these changes, especially for YouTube newcomers, but it shouldn’t be too long for everyone to bounce back to normal.

The success of YouTube can easily be attributed to Google’s business intelligence. As the number one search engine for most of the world, Google has been leading the internet for over the last ten years. They know that technology changes faster than most people can keep up with, and they know that in order to stay in the game, they must keep up with the changes.
