Earnings Preview: SYMC, HIG, GMCR, MUR, NEWP, RIG

Here’s our preview of the most important earnings to be announced this afternoon after the market closes:

Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC) is expected to post earnings of 33 cents per share after the market closes. The firm’s revenues are projected to hit $1.69 billion for the first three months, a slight increase from last year’s $1.67 billion. The firm’s earnings have been growing and as the computing public becomes more security aware the firm will hope to capitalize on a range of security products in the future.

The Hartford Financial Services Group (NYSE:HIG) is expected to have had a good solid quarter. Analysts are looking for earnings of $0.92 per share a drop from the same period last year when the firm earned $1.19 per share. Revenue is also expected to see a drop from last year’s $6.31 billion to a $5.41 billion. The expected results mirro what analysts have seen among many financials in the opening quarter of 2012. It’s a tough environment for investment firms and their numbers are showing it.

Murphy Oil (NYSE:MUR) is expected to increase earnings to $1.42 per share compared with last year’s $1.38. The exploration and refining company will benefit from the high world wide oil prices resulting in revenue of an expected $7.21 billion. Last year’s revenue totaled $7.35 billion. The firm is still rebounding from the loss it reported in  the fourth quarter of 2011.

Transocean LTD (NYSE:RIG), the offshore contract drilling firm, is another company in the oil industry that investors will be studying closely this quarter. Forecasts call for earnings of 32 cents per share down from the same period last year’s 54 cents per share. The company’s stock rose yesterday as investors but suffered a fall since, dropping to 49.85 at time of writing.

Newport Corporation (NASDAQ:NEWP) is trading up ahead of its announcement of its earnings for the fourth quarter. The company is expected to announce earnings per share of around 27 cents per share in this quarter. The company missed analysts expectations last quarter and though the company upped its own forecast questions will be asked if they are not met. Analysts are expecting revenue of about $157 million at the firm.

Green Mountain Coffee Roaster Inc. (NASDAQ:GMCR) is expected to do well in its year on year earnings. In the first three months of 2011 the company earned 48 cents per share. In the same period thins year the firm is expecting earnings of 64 cents per share. Revenue is expected to land at $971.7 million compared to last year’s $647.7 million
