Apple To Build Secure Off-Campus Restaurant To Prevent Leaks

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has plans to build an off-site restaurant in hopes to prevent competitors from listening in on employee conversations that involve future plans. Cupertino Planning Commission approved the planning request.

The new building will be several blocks away from the headquarters. It is reported to have seventy parking spaces, cafeteria, courtyard, meeting rooms, and recreational facilities.  The  21,468 square foot structure is supposed to be a short-term project. And unlike Apple’s current restaurant Caffe Mac, the new cafeteria won’t be open to visitors.

Dan Whisenhunt, Apple’s Director of Real Estate Facilities, explained the necessity of building a new cafeteria. He said the new building would provide a more secure environment and it would allow their employees to discuss business plans or projects without the fear of being overheard by competitors.

Apple has lost several  iPhone prototypes in the past. Back in 2010, they lost the iPhone 4 at a bar in Mountain View before it landed over in Gizmodo’s offices. The same thing happened to the iPhone 4s at a San Francisco bar although it was never found. Rumor also has it that several employees have been fired in the past for divulging company or technology secrets out in the open.

This new cafeteria/recreation center sounds like a smart idea, especially if they’re worried that competitors might try to snoop in on their conversations. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is a valuable company and they know that. And since Apple is not the only technology company in to the Cupertino area, they must take precautionary measures to protect prototypes and sensitive information.  The only question I have  is why didn’t they build one  sooner?  Of course, none of that matters now as they’re building the cafeteria/recreation center.

When you work for a company as big and as valuable at Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), you can never have too much security.

Here are some screenshots where they’re locating cafeteria.
